Spray Tanning Systems

You have probably heard about them and you might have used one at some point, but do you really know how airbrush tanning systems work?

They are really not that complicated.

There are three main parts that comprise an airbrush tanning system. A compressed air tank, an application wand, and the actual spray tan solution.

The compressed air tank is used to feed the application wand pressurized air. This small tank, which usually plugs into the wall, takes the air from outside it and pumps it into the tank at a high pressure. It is then stored in this tank until you are ready to use it.

The application wand, usually in the form of an airbrush, is connected to the compressed air tank by a hose usually made of rubber. When the button on the application wand is pressed, it opens a valve, which allowed to pressurized air to escape with a high velocity out of the small spout at the end of the wand.

The actual spray tan solution is usually a liquid. It is stored in a very small tank that is attached to the application wand. It directly feeds into the air nozzle, so when the high pressure air is released, it mixes with the spray tan solution, turns into a mist, and shoots out the nozzle with an even consistency. This is how the spray tan solution makes it onto your skin.

To make sure your airbrush tanning system stays in tip top shape and does not break, it is important to keep the nozzle and the rest of the application wand clean. If any leftover spray tan solution sticks to the inside of the nozzle or the feeder tube, it will impede the progress of the compressed air, causing the release of the spray tan solution to be uneven, and eventually result in an uneven tan on your body. The best way to combat this is to purchase some specialized airbrush or tanning wand cleaning solution, which is usually available at you local tanning store. This way, you will have even and beautiful tans for the life of your tanning machine.
